Introduction
Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (Urdu: often abbreviated as SKIMS, is the largest medical institute under State Legislature Act in Srinagar, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
SKIMS is the only medical university of the union territory of J&K, headed by a Director who is also the Ex-officio Secretary to the Government.
Lieutenant Governor J&K is the Chairperson of the SKIMS governing body that performs the role of the cabinet for the semi-autonomous super-speciality hospital and the Institute under State Legislature Act (university like status). In addition to the Institute under State Legislature Act and the main hospital, the institute comprises the State Cancer Institute, Maternity Hospital, Nursing college, Paramedical college, and an affiliated medical college & hospital which is on the city outskirts at Bemina.
History
Govt SKIMS Medical College was founded in 1989 by the erstwhile Kashmir Medical Trust as private Medical college called as JVC (Jhelum Valley Medical College) and was taken over by Government in 1998 and named it as SKIMS Medical College. Situated on NH1A in Bemina area of Srinagar J&K( India),it is about 4-5 Km from the city centre and easily approachable from any part of the valley as well as the interiors of the city of Srinagar.
The campus encompasses an approximate area of 400 Kanals of land. The trust started the hospital in 1993 but it did not pick up. The college had been running for seven years with three batches already passed out. The graduates of this college were not able to get any job or go for post graduation pending the MCI recognition. To safeguard the interest of students the newly elected government of Dr Farooq Abdullah in a historic decision took over and attached this institute with the SKIMS Soura in 1998. The then Director SKIMS Soura, Dr Mehraj ud Din appointed Dr Yaqoob Khairadi as vice principal which paved the way for recruitment of faculty, nursing staff and other paramedical staff in various departments. Prof M Afzal Wani the next principal laid the foundation of new hostels as well as made policy decisions for the college .
Following the takeover by the government the already dysfunctional departments were streamlined and the plan was made to develop the whole campus on the requirement of a full fledged Medical College based on MCI requirements. A well known hospital architect was engaged and a blue print was laid down. The boys and girls hostel was built as per this plan given by the architect on priority . Dr Gulam Jeelani Qadri (Principal 2006-2009) was instrumental in formulating the service rules of the non gazetted staff of this college. He further strengthened the faculty and paramedical staff. This was further taken ahead by Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Shah (principal 2009-2012). All principals and Directors did make it a priority to further develop the hospital and the college infrastructure. The current Principal Prof Irfan Rabbani has been doing lot of work to meet all the expectations of the students , faculty, employees as well as of patients.
Hostel Division
Well maintained on premises 04 No. of hostels for male/ female students/ doctors with all the entertainment facilities
consisting of TV room, TT room and a reading room. Headed by the Wardens under the direct supervision of
Principal/ Director, the hostels inhibit around 75 % of the students presently enrolled in the college. Guarded
24X 7 by our dedicated security personnel and supervised by our professional supervisors, the hostels are homes
away from the homes for all the students. Preference to students residing in far flung areas is given
