Government Medical College (formerly known as Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences) is a medical institute located in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh. It is affiliated to Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences.

The academic achievements of the institution are several, which include University ranks, admission to higher studies etc. It has maintained best results in all university examinations consistently. All the courses offered are approved by competent authority. The institution aims to offer many courses in various areas of medical science and is also running PG degree courses in selected specialities.

History

The foundation stone for the medical college was laid by Late. Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 01-07-2007. The Institute was named as Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ongole and established as semiautonomous institute under act 31 of 2007 spread over 37.23 acres. RIMS has been converted to “Government Medical College” with effect from 28/12/2018 vide G.O, M.S No. 232 HM & FW (A) dept.

First batch of M.B.B.S course was started with 100 students during the academic year 2011-2012.
During 2019-2020, Twenty additional seats were added under EWS Quota.
Post Graduate courses were initiated in the year 2018, in 3 departments viz; Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology with 4 seats each.
In the year 2021, Two seats were added in the department of Psychiatry.
Letter of intent for Post Graduate course seats was received from NMC for one seat in Respiratory Medicine and two seats in forensic medicine.
Application was submitted for NMC for new 79 post graduate seats.

The Government Medical College campus is in nearly 40 acres in size and has a total constructed space of about 8,60,000 square metres. The College buildings cover over 3,28,000 square metres, with distinct Hostel and residential blocks, while the Hospital structures, including the OPD complex, cover over 5,20,000 square metres.
